"When it's time to work - you gotta WORK"
Health & fitness is experiencing a boom in recent years. Never has it been so 'cool' to be fit and healthy. With this, there are more gyms, health clubs, studios and classes then you can poke a stick at. Once when you only had a few to choose from, now its confusing just to pick one in your area. But the funny thing is, as more places for training become available, more people seem to be forgetting the reason they are there in the first place - to work.
Many people see the gym as a social environment to plan their weekend activities, most times no fault of their own. With many clubs, their advertising seems to be focused on this, and why not - it creates sales. Sales equal dollars and dollars equal bigger and better gyms.
So what do we need to do? We need to remember why we have joined the gym in the first place. Whether your goal was to lose a few kilos, tone up your arms and stomach or to totally transform your physique, this needs to be the primary focus when training. Keep idle chitchat to a minimum if it is not conductive to your goals, and get to work. I am not saying to be totally unsociable when your training, but just remember why you are there.
Many people develop friendships with fellow gym members. This is great as you meet people with similar interests, but if you must talk socially do so after both your sessions. This way, it will not hinder your training, plus in reality your conversation will be much more enjoyable as your session will be finished. Below is a small checklist you could follow if gym socialising can sometimes be a problem for you:
- train with a walkman
- train with a cap on pulled down low
- avoid long conversations
- If needed, avoid people whom long conversations seem likely with (just until both your training is over)
- get a training partner (others feel less likely to start a conversation)
- train early morning (never as busy)
So remember, when its time to work - WORK!
